My Basement Has Flooded, Now What?

7/14/2020 (Permalink)

Flooded Basement Having water intrude into your basement can damage appliances, carpet, floors, and even heirlooms.

Going down the stairs to find that your basement now looks like an in-ground pool is something you don't want to see. Having water intrude into your basement can damage appliances, carpet, floors, and even heirlooms. You may not know where to even start... but that's where our team at SERVPRO of Dale City/Lake Ridge and SERVPRO of Woodbridge/Lorton gives you solutions! If you do encounter flooding, contact a certified restoration professional right away!

What to do when your basement floods

Protect yourself with rain boots / protective gear: Don't walk into the water in your sandals or slippers, the water could be contaminated depending on the source. You won't want to ruin your good shoes walking into that. If the water is high, you may want to break out those waders.

Find the source of the water: If the water is from a burst pipe, hot water heater, sewage backup, or other appliance failure, immediately shut off the water!

Check your sump pump or drain (if you have them): These can help drain any water from the basement after flooding, but they need to be in working condition. If they are clogged, try to get the clog out so they can begin doing their job!

-  Remove any valuables: Remove any important documents, family heirlooms, electronics (if safe to do so) and bring them into a safer area.

If the amount of water is minimal, you may use a wet/dry vacuum, mop, and a bucket.

If you find more than an inch or two, call us at 703-583-8484.  Our team is highly trained in water damage restoration. We regularly monitor and document throughout the extraction and drying process!
