PLANNING FOR THE SAFETY OF YOUR HOME WHILE ON VACATION
7/2/2020 (Permalink)
It's that season again in Northern Virginia! Summer is here and it's time for everyone to pack up their bags and families and head to their favorite vacation spot. You’ve been planning this trip for several weeks but have you planned for the safety of your home while you’re away? Water damages occur when least expected!
Find tips below that could save your home from a water damage or other potential threats while you relax on the beach.
Take Plumbing and Electric Precautions
- Shut off gas and water at the meter, supply tank or appliances
- Turn off the water valves to washing machines, sinks, and the dishwasher
- Unplug electronics to cut down on any possible shortages
- Check your smoke detectors to ensure they are working properly
- Adjust your thermostat to 75-80 degrees, which should help control usage.
Make Arrangements With Emergency Contacts
- Choose a Close friend or neighbor to check on your home
- Provide them with emergency contacts
- Ask them to turn on your porch lights (or set on timers)
- Have them collect mail and newspapers - burglars look for homes with overflowing mail
- Leave them written information on alarm codes.
